Exploring unique functions from the "Interface"

It is a common knowledge in recent research that "surface and bulk are different". However, then what is the differencebetween a surface or interface and a bulk?
When defining a surface or interface, there is always an "orientation". In the case of a water  surface, the upper part is airand the lower part is bulk water, and the boundary between these  two media is defined with the "water surface" or the "air-water interface". The orientation of the  molecules at the interface affects a wide variety of physical properties andfunctions,  such as hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, adhesion, biocompatibility, and friction, etc.

Sum-frequency generation spectroscopy is a unique method to selectively observe the behavior of molecules at surfacesand interfaces by using the specific light generated at the interface  between different media when the target sample isirradiated with two short laser pulses of  different wavelengths.

The goal of this laboratory is to use various spectroscopic techniques to elucidate the  relationship between molecules andvarious micro- and macroscopic phenomena occurring at  surfaces and  interfaces, such as hydrophilicity, water repellency, friction, biocompatibility,  adhesion, delamination, molecular adsorption, liquid interfaces, and charge accumulation/transport phenomena inside the cutting-edge of the organic devices.
